ANNAPI... ANOTHER GAME OF US ACTIVELY AVOIDING GETTING CLOSER CR...... weeps
like many many others, toi's first impression of jin ling was that he didn't like him at all. he was such a goddamn brat, i'm sorry. it's funny because in their first conversation, they agreed on more stuff than they disagreed with, but they still ended up fighting and toi left it thinking he's annoying. and then the horse thing with anya happened and he continued to think jl was annoying. actually that entire first week was just, toi having not stellar opinions about him despite the fact that they did agree on stuff.
they didn't actually really start talking til w2 because you were running from me. but his opinion also didn't get that much better than either, because that was when they argued about weed?? it was still dumb, and toi's opinion didn't really change there either, but then jin ling hit him in his injury with the soccer ball and... he didn't actually apologize but he did show concern, tsunly. so toi at least realized that jin ling wasn't like a huge asshole, and was just tsun, so that did get him some points?
i have to say here that jin ling did also give toi some enta vibes, but not as much as zenitsu did because jl didn't yell at toi about his love life. but the way they argued reminded toi of him, so toi was also wooloolooing away from jl because he did not want to deal with any reminders of his friends, even if those reminders were just arguing like dumb kids. jin ling was also the person toi fought the most physically with... as in, jin ling fought with him back (since agni was the person toi hit the most overall but agni never hit him back). which was very familiar!! toi did not actually care that jl fought him because it was something toi was used to and it made things a little more normal in this crazy world.
but overall at this point, toi really does not think that much about jin ling. like, most of his opinion on him besides the fighting stuff mostly came from other people. ayabe and anya would mention him to toi? so toi knew that he had some people who cared about him and were concerned over him. he actually knew that jin ling helped make the soba because anya flat out told him that he helped, so toi was being nice when he didn't mention it to him that he already knew when it later came up. but yeah, toi was aware that jin ling was a good person even if he did not really get to see that for the most part, since so many people liked him enough.
all of this changed after their break-in and anya's death. even besides anya dying, the two of them did go on a lil adventure together, so toi learned that jin ling was reliable! and that he could count on him when things go wrong!! i wouldn't say he learned to trust jin ling entirely from that, but he did learn that he could go to him if he needed help with something or if something went wrong then jin ling wouldn't let him die. he also learned a lot about jin ling in general just from his actions? jin ling put himself at risk to save all of the dogs, even more than the rest of them did. it showed he was a very caring and brave person. especially since like... toi grabbed onto one of the dogs and was holding onto him, but if it turned out that toi wasn't going to survive by holding the dog, he would have ended up abandoning the puppu. so, with that in mind, seeing what jin ling did made him feel ashamed of himself
i think one of the things is that like. the two of them were similar in a lot of ways? they had coping mechanisms that were alike, they both pushed people away, they were both quick to anger and would fight. but one of the major differences was that jin ling was just like... more heroic? like both of them wanted to make their family proud and live up to something beyond themselves, but jin ling just seemed more. good? he was very ready to sacrifice himself to save others, meanwhile toi was also trying, but he couldn't confidently say that he would have sacrificed himself willingly? because dying while attempting to save others is different than actively choosing someone else's life over another, and toi felt that jin ling would have done that sacrifice more readily than he would have.
anyway, anya died. which is what really shifted toi's thoughts on jin ling. toi had his own issues about anya, and it was obvious that jin ling did too. they talked about her a little, and he could tell that jin ling had regrets about anya besides the whole, her dying on them thing. and like, toi didn't seek nhs out because it didn't seem like he was particularly close to anya, but also nhs was an adult while jin ling was another kid, so he figured jl was the more in need of someone to talk to, especially since they were both in similar situations. and having other people who weren't there come to you and say it wasn't your fault while asking about what happened is different than someone who was actually there and is feeling more or less the same way you do. they may both blame themselves but at least they can share that feeling!!
he also learned more about jl in general? they talked about family stuff! jin ling asking toi why he doesn't just ask his family for money was so bad but also so funny!! they got to learn about each other a little more, while at the same time not actually diving too deeply about it, but they at the very least learned that they had more common ground than they thought they did since they are both motivated by trying to please someone. so at this point is when jin ling went from someone annoying to someone that.... he wasn't a friend or anything, but toi decided to look after him more often.
he didn't really consider him a friend until they had soba with zenitsu together. it was a very nice and just normal moment, especially after how fuckin crazy that weekend in general was. it made him remember hanging out with kazuki and enta, and how happy those memories are, so... eating with them also made him sad, too? because from toi's pov, this wasn't something he could have again, so it was a glimpse into something he missed. but yeah he started to see jl more as friend now even though he would never admit to it.
also i have to say that jl probably made toi break his "don't pry into their personal business" thing the most because. jin ling had this habit of casually dropping names or canon references that toi had NO GODDAMN IDEA WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT. it annoyed toi so much. every time jin ling mentioned someone he knew canonly, toi wanted to hit him. what the fuck is demon cultivation. who the hell is wei wuxian. shut the fuck up, jl.
ANYWAY like many others, toi... might seek jl out after when he is able to, depending on how things go, but that won't be for a while. also, if he ever finds out he and anya are a thing, he'd be kind of :/ about it because he was kind of hoping for zenitsu to confess...... since zenitsu was the one who constantly talked about anya all the time.... i'm sorry, jl, but toi wants your ship to sink
