I'm going to skip order for a moment bc I was in bed last night and had a brief flash of "Oh I lied to Jae, Ayabe did NOT like Phoenix" followed immediately by "no wait, Phoenix was dead so he doesn't count" and then with that resolved, my heart was settled and I fell asleep

ANYWAYS!!!!! Ayabe never got to know Phoenix on any deeper level, so what he had to go off of were surface things-- one of which things is that Phoenix is an adult and Ayabe does not handle adults well and would never have sought him out for anything personal. Like, there were clearly times where Phoenix was trying to take care of him, handing him pudding or when he carried Ayabe out of the laundry room when he spilled the bleach, but Ayabe saw that as the act of an adult taking care of a child and not specifically Phoenix caring about him personally, and since Ayabe grew up with little to no parental presence in his life, his gut reaction to this was to reject and run away. NONE OF THIS IS PHOENIX'S FAULT, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN FINE IF PHOENIX WERE A CHILD LIKE HE ACTS BUT INSTEAD HE'S AN ADULT AND SO AYABE JUST GOES "UGH" AND WALKS AWAY BC HE'S SOMEWHAT BITTER ABOUT PARENTS AND ADULTS IN GENERAL

Phoenix's personality was his fault though asdlfkjh The way he was so flippant and roundabout whenever Ayabe tried to talk to him, he haaaaaaaatted that. He could tell that Phoenix was trying to guide him into the right conclusion, but it just pissed Ayabe off because he prefers people to be direct as possible and say what they mean. So if Phoenix was never going to be clear and direct with him, Ayabe wouldn't waste his breath trying to talk with him.

This entire tl;cr is me being ): because I love Phoenix and so many people here love Phoenix and Ayabe did NOT. Phoenix could have done his role spectacularly and led everybody to victory against the house and still Ayabe would be "ugh" because Phoenix set fire to the kitchen trying to make a sandwich and had the audacity to smile about it instead of taking it seriously and so he had no chance from the very start. I felt particularly bad when it was hostage week and when the announcement was made that Phoenix and Four were dead, Ayabe went "oh good, Kosue is safe" I'M SO SORRY THAT WAS THE GUT REACTION two people are dead which means his sister is safe... He knew that there were people who were devastated by Phoenix's death and they were people who were very close to Ayabe too like Beau and Ken and Luna, but his reaction to that announcement was relief and he felt like a piece of shit and decided to never ever ever admit this or hint about this to ANYBODY because feeling relief over anybody's death is such a scummy feeling AAAAAA

Ayabe disliked Phoenix as a concept because he never got to know Phoenix as a person............... that's how it was, this is why he never ate any of the pudding, he never gave Phoenix a chance
